Setsubun and Mamemaki Bean Throwing Festival

We took a walk to Tama River and while we were playing, everyone was startled to see a monster hiding in one of the big pillars.  The children started throwing beans to drive the monster away.  After several brave attempts by our little ones, the monster finally gave up and left.

Bean-Throwing Festival or Mamemaki is a special ritual to cleanse away all the evil of the former year and drive away disease-bringing evil spirits for the year to come. (Source: wikipedia)

Practicing these kinds of traditions, make the children become aware of and appreciate Japanese culture at a young age plus it's a fun activity! ( * . * )
